Bags or accessories in leather : why are they so expensive?
There are several factors to consider when creating a piece that can justify the price. The first concerns the production of the article with the choice of raw materials and the method of manufacture. Other factors are the reputation of the brand or just the exclusivity of the products.
Leather, an absolute luxury
The cost of the raw material comes to almost half the price of an article! Synthetic substitutes such as faux leather (a textile coated to simulate the feel and appearance of leather) are very inexpensive to produce unlike genuine leather. These come from animal skins that may have traces of bites, scratches and other defects. Thus, the larger a piece is with very few damaged parts, the more expensive it is. This is especially true for exotic leathers such as shark, snake, ostrich or crocodile skins, which are becoming increasingly rare. Once the skin has been selected, it is also necessary to add tanning processes and the different treatments so that the leather is ready to be transformed.
Handmade, the must of quality
In luxury leather goods, the realization of an article is often done by hand by a single leather craftsman from the beginning to the end. The fabrication time can reach up to 40 hours and a particular concern is brought to the regularity of the seams and the quality of the assembly. In most houses, a craftsman spends several years training on small items before he can create bags or other large pieces. Thus, the qualification of the workforce is also an important component of the price of the articles. This is much less for discounted products that are generally manufactured on assembly lines with more or less standard qualification levels.
Limited editions, a guarantee of exclusivity
As in all other sectors, mass production keeps prices low. Thus, low-priced products are often found in large quantities in multiple boutiques while luxury designers rely on exclusivity. Limited editions also allow for more rigorous quality control to maintain the brand image. For items in exotic leathers, the concept is pushed to the extreme with often unique items because no skin can be strictly identical to another!
The Brand image
The more a brand is known and recognized, the more its reputation add value on the price of its products. Indeed, it is a matter of showing that one has the means to offer oneself (or to be offered) such or such mark, and to carry it is sending particular signals on the status or commitment to a cause or other. Finally, acquiring a brand bag generally ensures the quality associated with it.
If you are tempted by leather, you can now make an informed choice on your next purchase, at least as far as the price you want to put it. For other elements to consider when buying new accessories, they will be treated soon in another blog post!
